detroit institute of arts

i went to the detroit institute of arts museum to see the rembrandt and the face of jesus exhibit.  it was really great.

we bought tickets online the night before to reserve our viewing time.  our biggest gripe about the entire experience was the $3.50 "convenience fee" that was tacked onto each ticket purchased.  the ticket price was $16, so this "convenience fee" was almost 22% of the ticket price.  at this point, purchasing tickets online is cheaper for the museum since they do not have to employee someone to speak to me and they don't even have to print the ticket!  if they are really counting on this fee, just roll it into my admission price please; it would make me a little less grumpy while still getting the same amount of money out of me!

we arrived a little early to the exhibit, which ended up being a good move since they had completely sold the exhibit out for the day.  they let people into the exhibit in batches, so it was fine that we got there a little on the early side.

each participant received a personal headset to listen to descriptions of 14 of the paintings in the exhibit.  we were also instructed that we could view the exhibit in any order, which was great since it was on the busy end of the spectrum.

i really enjoyed it; it was one of the best exhibits i have seen recently in terms of the depth of information given to the viewers.  as someone who has now seen a few of these, i enjoyed the headset learning more of the details about the art work.  it was interesting to see how rembrandt's life integrated into his art including his move to amsterdam during the "dutch golden age" and his house and studio's proximity to the jewish quarter of the city.  this exhibit is also going to shown at the philadelphia museum of art and the louvre.  it was great to see all the different pieces of art they brought together to put this exhibit together.  the audio mentioned a few times that a few sets of the art had not been seen together since they were separated leaving rembrandt's studio, which was pretty fascinating to me.

my boyfriend enjoyed the exhibit as well saying that he learned a lot about rembrandt, his contemporaries and the world in which he painted.

we did wander through some more of the exhibit and did poke our heads into the detroit revealed: photographs 2000-2010 to see what they had in there.  we enjoyed some of the pictures of detroit.
