amsterdams historisch museum
my next stop in amsterdam was the amsterdams historisch museum. my guidebook recommended that i go to this museum first to really understand amsterdam. unfortunately, i could not quite do that, but it still provided some perspective on the city. this museum has the same mission and objective as the museum of london, but unfortunately, was not as good as that museum.
from a logistics and layout perspective, this museum was a mess. it was hard to find entrance, believe it or not. i literally walked right past it at one point and did not realize that is where i was supposed to go in. i tried to do the museum in order since it is supposed to be reviewed chronologically. unfortunately, that did not happen since it was so difficult to follow the order, so that was frustrating. i could not figure out where i was half the time in the map that was given in the pamphlet or the one in my guidebook. i was so lost that to leave the museum, i basically had to retrace my steps through the entire museum. and wow, was that a long walk.
i learned a lot about amsterdam, but the museum does not necessarily seem to be particularly edited. i think i walked the entire museum, but still could not find all of the items that were on the "best of" list. by the time i left the museum, i understood why they had a "45 minute tour" option. i liked learning about the early history of amsterdam. given that amsterdam was the trading capital of the world, the artifacts were so global including these elephant tusks.
the museum did have some redeeming qualities though. i loved that everything translated to english, which was fantastic. that allowed me to really understand and learn all that the museum was trying to communicate. i also had an amazing, delicious meal in the cafe for only 7.5 EUR, which was impressive.
i liked their special exhibit celebrating the 400 years of diplomatic relations with turkey. this museum and the rijksmuseum both had exhibits focusing on this milestone. one of the exhibits included dresses designed in turkey, but by dutch designers.
an interesting stop in the city, but be prepared to just go with the flow in the museum. do not attempt to go in chronological order!
time in museum: 2.5 hrs (including a half hour lunch break)
