centre pompidou - musee national d'art moderne
after the louvre, which i mistakenly thought i would just revist on tuesday, i went to the centre pomidou - musee national d'art moderne. (the louvre is closed on tuesdays). the museum pass again got me into this museum and skipped the entrance queue, which was not large. i got to the museum around 4:45. this museum also wins points because it is open late just about every night of the week. (one of largest pain points with this trip was that everything seemed to close at 6 pm!)
this building is incredible. it acts as home to many different types of venues including a movie theater, library and the modern art museum. the permanent exhibits are on the fourth and fifth floor of the building.
before heading into the exhibits, i did ride the escalator all the way up to the top. it was my first beautiful view of paris. i could see the sacre coeur and the effiel tower. it was a little particular that the museum could only be entered from the fourth floor off the escalator and not the fifth floor, but i went with it!
some of the art was pretty awesome. they had quite a few recent pieces which were spectacular. i really liked the following pieces:

i obviously like the non traditional non paintings the best. none of the more recent painters really struck my fancy. other pieces were definitely not my cup of tea. it goes back to the usual argument of "if i can do it, is it really art?" they had a particularly obscene one that i am not sure how it qualified as art either.
it did cover a few of the "1001 paintings i must see before i die" although i am not sure many of them qualify for that particular expression. some were not as noteworthy as i would have liked!
i wish i had gone to the fifth floor first as it had more of the classical artists i associate with modern art like matisse, picasso and warhol. it turns out that most of that art was in the musee d'orsay, which i liked much more than this museum.
overall, i thought it was an improvement on the museum of modern art in new york city through having a much larger space for display and takes the avant garde building design to a new level. it does however lack some of the draw that the moma has since most of those paintings (like the van goghs, monet, etc.) reside in the musee d'orsay. it also charges for its special exhibits, which MOMA does not.
