musee rodin
i decided to stop at the musee rodin after the musee d'orsay. they are about a ten minute walk apart. the musee rodin is also included on the museum pass and is very close to the hotel des invalides, which was considered a must-see by my guidebook.
i walked right in and got my ticket, but then had to wait to actually getting in the museum. they were very strict about capacity and the space was really not that large. while unhappy waiting outside in the rain, i did appreciate this once i was in the museum. it was pretty easy to get around and see what i wanted to see without dealing with a packed house.
the museum is currently being refurbished. they had set up a temporary exhibit in its place using about half of the museum space. we saw rodin's best pieces in chronological order of creation. i thought they did a great job selecting the best overall pieces from his portfolio. i could not tell that we were really missing anything of very high value. the museum did a great job in their pamphlet of describing the purpose and goal of each room highlighting the important features of the art in that room. i particularly enjoyed seeing the original the thinker as well as a painting of the thinker by edvard munch. it must have been pretty exciting to see something you created inspiring another artist.
the gardens surrounding the house were very beautiful as well. in the gardens, three of his sculptures are on view. all three of the sculptures were originally smaller and then later enlarged. below is the the thinker, which is prominently displayed in the garden. i did not make it to see the other two given a torrential downpour soon followed these two pictures below.
just a general note, but there is no handicap access to the museum. perhaps this is something that will be added in the renovations.
also, as a note, the shop was very poorly set up. it was so crowded near the front i just ended up skipping it. it did not look that bad though once you got through that initial crowd.
i learned more about rodin than i expected to from the museum. the descriptions in each room were fantastic. i am curious to see what the renovations improve.
