munich

okay, last, but definitely not least, was my stop in munich, germany!  i decided to fly to munich since it ended up being cheaper, but it also gave me a full two days in munich!  

on the first day, i was lucky enough to go to the 
- alte pinakothek
- residenz
we also checked out the hofbrauhaus, the original one!

then on monday, i covered some ground heading to the schloss nymphenberg seeing all of the outpost buildings as well.  i then headed to the deutsches museum, which is a large natural history museum.

i recently found this book, 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die by Stephen Farthing.  it contains a list of paintings from pre-1400s to current 2000s screened by experts in the field.  i love it!    i have converted all of the paintings in the book into an excel as i start to track which ones i have seen!  i have currently viewed 241 out of 1001, so i am riding right around 24%.   take a peek at which ones are on the list !

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

One of the few tickets we bought in advance for this trip was for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao .  What a beauty.  A piece of art in of itself. Let me start with the outside, which has a number of statues and the building itself.  As we walked up to the building, we were greeted by the terrier of flowers.  It was fairly stunning at five floors high.  When you get up close, how the flowers and colors come together. I saw her sibling in Tokyo in Roppongi Tower Getting into the museum, it was the smoothest entrance we had been in.  They have plenty of workers there handing out the headsets and checking tickets.  We got there as it was opening and headed immediately up to the top.   The Jenny Holzer: Thing Indescrible exhibit was/is hard to forget.  I am not sure how much I would consider it art though.  It was thought provoking and we did spend some serious time thinking about it.  The scale of some of her work was...

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

After we checked in our hotel in Hiroshima, we hopped on a street car and went to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park .   The park is a sobering reminder of the devastation and destruction from World War II.  The park is a few hundred meters from the epicenter of the atomic bomb, which was dropped on August 9, 1945 and then three days later in Nagasaki.  The building in this photo is of the A-Bomb dome, a UNESCO heritage site, and one of the few buildings that survived the bombing.   The park is full of specific memorials focused on different groups.  One example is a monument in honor of students that were studying abroad in Hiroshima. We also went into one of the two museum buildings.  It really demonstrated the large impact of the bomb.  The first hand accounts are truly touching.  The area's residents continue to be impacted as the effects last and have ongoing impact.  Given no one had ever seen the bomb before, ...
