Cincinnati Museum Center

A few weeks ago Jason and I attended a Night at the Museum at the Cincinnati Museum Center with the University of Michigan Alumni Association.   We had not been to the museum since it had been finished, so we were very excited about this invite.   The museum had been under construction since we moved to Cincinnati, but did finish about a year ago.   It was an extensive renovation – from what we understand costing significant dollars and was over two years.   They restored fundamentals in the building and also revamped also the exhibits.    They even uncovered additional space that could be utilized for additional exhibit capacity. U of M had brought in three different sets of faculty to provide short lectures in three of the key areas within the museum.    To start, we headed to the Dinosaur Hall to learn about fossils that had been found near the Licking River in the early 1700s.  The professor brought up a set of bones t...

This past weekend, we had our in-laws in town and decided to go to the Cincinnati Museum Center to see the Star Wars and the Power of Costumes .   It is in town for another couple of weeks.  It was created by the Denver Art Museum in partnership with the Lucas Museum.   The museum kicks off with a video giving an overview of the exhibit.  I liked learning George Lucas's "process" as it came to costumes.  I had never realized it before, but based on the costumes you know exactly what role the characters play in the movie and what attributes and traits the character has.  There were a number of the classic characters in their iconic costumes.  The exhibit was divided into themes -- really based on the types of characters e.g., robots, villains.   It really was fun to see everything in person and get a feel for size, scale and texture.  The exhibit provided great context and background on how the textiles a...

Cincinnati Museum Center

Just recently, my husband and I headed to the Cincinnati Museum Center to check out the Viking exhibit, Vikings: Beyond the Legend , before it left. The museum center is in the old Cincinnati train station, a truly iconic Cincinnati building.  As of right now, it is heavily under construction.  The only parts of the museum that were open were the children's museum and this special exhibit.   When we arrived, I said we had a Cincinnati Art Museum membership, which was supposed to get us a discount (almost half off our tickets).  The worker did not believe there was any discount with that, but had to be corrected by another employee.  I believe this has been in place for almost a year, so that's surprising.  She even made a comment that she had turned down someone before.  I was grateful for that as it basically halved the price of the tickets from $25 per person to ~$13.   I did not find exhibit warranted a $25 price tag.  While enjoya...
