Museum Hopper

i went to the brooklyn museum of art yesterday after a failed attempt last weekend. we had the day off from work, but the subways were still running normally! i went out to see one exhibit, to live forever: art and the afterlife in ancient egypt . i expected the exhibit to just focus on that, but it actually was primarily focusing on contrasting the upper, middle and lower class funerals. the exhibit was made up of 2 small rooms and 1 larger room. as i have found is typical of brooklyn museum exhibits, i was not sure if i went through the exhibit in the right order. i ended up going through all three rooms in clockwise orders circling back and finishing at the beginning. the exhibit was primarily contrasting the three classes. typically, the lower class would try to replicate the upper class funerals by either reducing the number of items (like food given to the dead, toys, fake servants), replacing more expensive materials with cheaper ones or changing the location of the funera...

i went to the brooklyn museum of art today. the subway posters/ads for the exhibit who shot rock & roll : a photographic history from 1955 to present have been calling out to me. it was fairly quiet as i entered the museum today and got up to get my ticket pretty quickly. after that, i headed up to the 5th floor for the exhibit. i found the exhibit generally well spaced although it was a difficult to navigate the exhibit. i did quite a bit of walking back and forth to take it all in. i am also 100% certain that i did not take in the exhibit in order. i was a little irritated that they let strollers into the exhibit. these were strollers that parents were using to hold all their jackets and bags, not actually their children! it was crowded enough without these extra items! overall, i find that the museum has quite an unusual layout. i thought that the exhibit was quite good. it covered a large era (over 50 years) and all different aspects of "rock and roll." i...

i went to the new york transit museum today after the insistance of my friend, matt. it was definitely worth the trip! i headed there on an overcast, hot, humid day. the museum is in a "retired" subway station, so probably not the best place to head when it is hot and humid. most of it is not air conditioned. it was pretty neat. i made it just in time for the tour. the tour took us through how the first subways were built, the history of paying subway fares, how they actually collect all the money out of the subway cars and buses, and then we got to walk and sit in old subway cars. the tour was definitely nice since the guide was informed and interesting, but there seemed to be plenty of signage and documentation around the museum that you could do it on your own. the museum flowed very nicely. when you enter, it is all about subway construction. you could explode your own set of dynamite, see the tools and many pictures of the construction. it was really int...

i went to the brooklyn museum of art by myself two weeks ago. they were setting up for a "first saturday" event. i wasn't too impressed. i asked for directions for the correct line to get tickets. i was told the incorrect line twice. the museum layout seemed okay. it was a little too spread out for my liking. also, a lot of the main passageways were blocked off. i am not sure if this is from the setup for the event that night or if it was just under construction. the artifacts were nice. nothing too special, it seemed. it seemed like a smaller version of the artifacts at the MET or the british museum. i did go see a special exhibit on utagawa: masters of the japanese print, 1770-1900 . it was pretty good. it didn't flow particuarly well. it didn't flow chronologically at all. it split into parts and if you went to the left, you eventually hit the other part of the exhibit going in the reverse...if that makes sense. times visited: 1 time in ...
