brooklyn museum of art
i went to the brooklyn museum of art today. the subway posters/ads for the exhibit who shot rock & roll: a photographic history from 1955 to present have been calling out to me.
it was fairly quiet as i entered the museum today and got up to get my ticket pretty quickly. after that, i headed up to the 5th floor for the exhibit. i found the exhibit generally well spaced although it was a difficult to navigate the exhibit. i did quite a bit of walking back and forth to take it all in. i am also 100% certain that i did not take in the exhibit in order. i was a little irritated that they let strollers into the exhibit. these were strollers that parents were using to hold all their jackets and bags, not actually their children! it was crowded enough without these extra items! overall, i find that the museum has quite an unusual layout.
i thought that the exhibit was quite good. it covered a large era (over 50 years) and all different aspects of "rock and roll." i really enjoyed the photographs of the concert goers and "pre-fame" shots of the musicians. it was an interesting hodgepodge of musicians although i am not exactly sure how eminem, U2, elvis and tupac all fall under the same category of "rock and roll." i thought there was a nice mix of photographs and music/videos. here is the new york times review of the exhibit.
after the exhibit, i wandered around a little bit more of the museum visiting the egyptian exhibit. i enjoyed the signage and descriptions, but again felt like it generally lead to nowhere. i had to walk back through the entire egyptian exhibit to find the stairs.
the score on this museum improved because it seemed generally less chaotic than the last time i visited. that being said, the exhibit could not make up for the other inadequacies.

time in museum: 1 1/4 hrs
overall: B- (up from a C+)
