Museum Hopper

it has been a while since i have had a museum post!  over the past month, life has gotten in the way.  i have a slew of posts coming up for italy, but i figured i would get this one out of the way!   over the past weekend, i went to nyc with my husband, mom and father for a bar mitzvah.  we went to the whitney  for a quick pop-in before heading to the airport.   we went and saw the classics from the whitney.  i am excited to see that they are getting a new space.  i wish they dedicated more space to the " classics " and less to some of the more outrageous exhibits.  i loved seeing their georgia o'keefe paintings and the stellas.  i had not seen all the alexander calder's wire mobiles since the special exhibit with his circus mobiles! my mom loves edward hopper and they just opened a pretty fantastic new exhibit about him.  it is called hopper drawings .  when edward hopper died, his artistic estate was bequeathed to the ...

i tried to go to the whitney yesterday to see the new hopper exhibit .  i was quite disappointed to find out the whitney opens at 1 pm on fridays .  i did not even think to look given that i got to the whitney around 11.  i am not sure why given they had a guard at the door telling everyone that the whitney was not open yet.  just open the door!  while i was rethinking my plans for the late morning, at least 20 people went to the door trying to get in.  what a waste.  i was so disappointed.    times visited: 5.5 (i get 1/2 a visit since i showed up) time in museum: 2 hrs overall: A-

i went to the whitney museum of american art with a friend from college today. this is the first one i have been to in a while since i sprained my ankle and was somewhat immobilized for a while. i had dinner with my friend, mike, this week and we decided to go! neither has an extensive (aka: any) art background. the top floor currently displays art that had been previously shown in the biennials. this included some beautiful peaces of art including one of the hopper paintings that i like. it was interesting to see how often certain artists had been shown (hopper had been shown over 15 times). the rest of the museum showed the current biennial. i am not sure what the current rules were, but i believe it was that they could not have shown something previously. the art was...interesting. i was happy to have mike there with me; otherwise, i am not sure that i would have spent quite as long at the museum. some of it was just beautiful/enjoyable. i loved this huge room of pa...

i went to the whitney museum on sunday for my 100th trip to a museum! i headed up there by myself mostly to see the georgia o'keeffe: abstraction exhibit. as expected, the exhibit was quite crowded. besides the permanent exhibit and the o'keeffe exhibit, 3 of the other floors were closed to viewers in preparation for upcoming exhibits. the o'keeffe exhibit took an entire floor which at least was well planned. the rooms were segregated by time period, which i felt was appropriate. i did not know much about georgia o'keeffe going into this exhibit. i did read this review from the nytimes as a prep going into the exhibit. it was interesting to see some of her less familiar work. the abstracts paintings were beautiful. i loved the colors; she seemed to experiment quite a bit with different shades of blue. her later works were influenced by flying around the world and her compound in arizona. the exhibit definitely displayed a side of o'keeffe's art...

i visited the whitney right after i finished visiting the met . i wanted to see one of their new special exhibits: alexander calder: the paris years 1926-1933 . i didn't know this artist specifically, but recognized some of his art from the ad in the subway. he designed mobiles and circus scenes. the exhibit was very crowded. i don't think it laid out as effectively as it could have been. two of the rooms were completely empty, but the others were overcrowded. i also don't think was based on the crowd flow, but on the popularity of the art. i was happy though when i went to view the static exhibits that they had brought back out my favorite hopper painting, one of cape cod. times visited: 3 time in museum: 1/2 hr overall: A-

i have been to the whitney twice. the first time they were celebrating hopper's art and the whitney's 75th "birthday ." the second time was to see the exhibit " The Summer of Love ." so, both spectacular exhibits. the summer of love exhibit was so popular that they ran out of brochures for it and there was a line out the door around the building to buy tickets to get in. i think the value of this museum varies greatly on if you like the exhibit that is being shown at the time. from the website it looks like they have about two stellar exhibits a year, which makes up about 6 months. to give you an idea, in the past 1 1/2 years, they had the hopper and birthday exhibit, a picasso exhibit, and this "summer of love" exhibit. so, check to see what's there before you head out. the layout of the museum is nice. large spaces, easy to navigate even when crowded. the guards don't seem to be super uptight either, which is nice. most of...
