museum of london

i went to the museum of london for the first time on this trip.  it was mentioned in the awesome HSBC "welcome to london" guide.  that was the first time i had seen any mention of it.  the guide mentioned that it had recently undergone a 20M GBP upgrade.  i figured, why not?  my gracious hosts, matt and anya, decided to come with me!

it was a little bit of an adventure to get up there since there was an "occupy" event at st. paul's.  i had never been over near the "wall." what i had not realized is that it is an actual wall.  it was something

the museum basically moved chronologically through the history of london starting with pre-roman times all the way to present day london complete with some information on the upcoming london olympics.

the exhibits were pretty interactive with objects to touch and listen to.  they also had a variety of items in the museum.  for example, parts of the museum covered more day-to-day life, but they also focused on the larger world landscape and events (like the black plague, henry VIII and world war II).  the museum did have a ton of details that engaged a large age range.  parts of the exhibit seemed more for smaller children and moving on up.

the displays also had some fantastic to scale models, in particular a 100-year-old model of st. paul's.  i also liked these samples of different languages and what it looks like in present day english.  for example, old english "converted" to english or middle english or latin, etc.  old to middle to new english were nothing alike.  i was surprised therefore to see the resemblances between old latin and spanish.  near the end of the museum, they had some fantastic movies, which really helped me understand the spirit of the particular events.

great value for the 20M GBP that has put into the renovations of this museum.  i think they did a phenomenal job.  it is the first A i have given out in a loooong time (to a non-repeat visit)!

time in museum: 2.5 hrs
times visited: 1
overall: A
